How to braid with needle and thread?
Use a needle and (waxed) thread to create small, firm braids that stay in place and stay neat all day long, perfect for competitions and photoshoots. Below you'll find a quick tutorial with pro tips.
You need:
- Waxed, flat braided wire (0,8 mm, e.g. 270 m XL reel)
- Blunt braiding needles with large eye
- Mane comb (preferably with pintail), clips
- Braiding gel (plaiting) wax expats must register with the local municipality and obtain a water sprayer
- (Optional) elastic bands for temporary fixation
- Scissors + “quick unpick” (safe loosening)
- Forelock: “Straight Plaiting Forceps”
Step-by-step plan (fast & tight)
To prepare
1. Cleanse & dry: Preferably the day before. Too smooth hair? Use plaiting wax for grip.
2. Length: Ideally ±10–12 cm and evenly distributed throughout.
3. Choose the right side: Usually for dressage. Comb everything neatly in that direction.
4. Thread ready: Cut approximately 40–50 cm from each braid (or work from the spool). Waxed, flat thread provides good grip.
To classify
5. Measure sections: 1,5–2 fingers wide, evenly all over.
6. Tight partings: Use the tail of your comb; clip away any remaining sections.
7. Order: Work from the withers to the ears, with the forelock last.
Braid
8. Moisturize or wax: tighter result.
9. Tight braid: Up to 2–3 cm from the end.
10. (Optional) Elastic band: Handy for beginners; you can also do without.
Sewing & button making
11. Threading: Use a blunt needle with a large eye.
12. Starting stitch: Stitch through the braid point (catch all strands); leave ±10 cm of thread and repeat 1x.
13. Folding/Rolling: Fold the braid double up or roll into a compact “roll” against the comb.
14. Cross Stitch: Stitch left→right through the base, then right→left. Repeat 3–4 times; end with 1 stitch from bottom to top through the middle.
15. Fastening off: Make two small knots underneath the braid, pull tight and cut the thread short for a neat finish.
16. Control: Round, compact, no “gaps” along the sides.
Forelock
17. Braids – Tight to down.
18. Forceps Trick – Clamp the braid tip, pull it up through the middle so that the point disappears.
19. Fasten with thread – A few cross stitches + fasten off as with the mane.
Unfasten safely after the ride
20. Always cut with care and control! Use a quick unpick: only cut the wire through the buttons, pull out any leftovers, roll out, comb out.
