What exactly happens when using the Equisk SteadyHands?
SteadyHands gloves are connected by an elastic hook-and-loop strap with a quick-release buckle. The strap can be adjusted to keep your hands further or closer apart.
The clip releases very easily with a short, sharp movement of your hands, and remains clicked upwards under constant pressure.
You use the band like a resistance band and gently push your hands apart against the resistance. This activates precisely the muscles needed to keep your hands aligned and stable.
When used correctly, the Equisk SteadyHands automatically helps your hands into the correct basic position, namely:
- Upright
- The right distance from each other
- In a forward-facing position
- Quiet, still hand
You'll also notice that you'll use your hand less and your seat and leg more – and your horse will be happier for it.
By gently pushing against the band, the rider activates the muscles of his hand, back, shoulders and upper arms, especially:
- Deltoid muscles
- The broadest part of the back
- Serratus
- Pectoral muscles
- Abdominal muscles
- Triceps
- brachioradialis
All of these muscles work together to stabilize the rider's seat and arms, resulting in better contact and hand position.
Many riders also report an improvement in the effectiveness of their seat.
The SteadyHands gloves aren't meant to be a tool you become dependent on. They're meant to help you feel which muscles to activate.
Once you've recognized that feeling, the idea is to practice how long you can keep these muscles active without wearing the gloves.
Over time, you'll need the SteadyHands less and less. However, even advanced riders competing at the highest level use SteadyHands gloves to make subtle adjustments to their hand and rein contact.
What problems do SteadyHands gloves help with?
- Excessive playing with the reins:
The SteadyHands help you become aware of excessive hand movements. The resistance bands limit the range of unnecessary movement and help keep your hands calmer. -
Downward-facing hands:
The SteadyHands activate arm, shoulder, and back muscles to correct this common mistake. Regular use helps gradually break this habit. -
Hands too wide:
The band limits how far apart the hands can move, helping to teach the correct distance. This helps build new, accurate muscle memory. -
Hands too low:
The SteadyHands encourage a slight bend in the elbows, leading to a better and more stable hand posture. This often occurs in conjunction with hands that are too wide and is addressed simultaneously. -
Too much reliance on the reins:
The SteadyHands increase awareness of excessive rein use and encourage the rider to ride more from the seat and leg instead of relying on the hand. -
Restless or uneven hands:
Increases awareness of hand movements and activates the right muscles to keep your hands more stable. The connecting band acts as a "bridge" between both hands, helping them learn to work together as a whole. This strengthens both the physical and mental connection between both hands, both individually and together.
